First of all, The Mermaid Inn probably (and by probably I mean definitely) has the most astonishing happy hour in town. From 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. you can order: Oysters for $1 each, Shrimp Corndogs for $3, Lobster Sliders for $8 each, Wine for $6 and Beer/Cocktails for $7 each. Yes, the seafood is fresh and the lobster rolls are known as one of the best in they city. Although Luke’s Lobster is my favorite, The Mermaid Inn offers an oversized brioche style bun with a more than fair amount of lobster. Thank goodness there is no excessive mayo. The Raw Bar is also a fantastic option and the Baby Grand Platter will make you pleasantly happy. I was anticipating the Lobster and Truffle Mac ‘n Cheese to be the hero of the night, but unfortunately, there were barely enough lobster bites for our party of four to share.
The Mermaid Inn offers satisfying service and fare right from the start with “Everything Crackers” to the end with the complimentary chocolate pudding (however, you might want to skip this and hop on over to Puddin’ just down the street for your dessert fix). You’ll also receive a little “Fish Fortune Teller” and depending on how the paper fish “wiggles” its head or tail, you’ll have a new statement about your personality. Just roll with the free entertainment! This restaurant is underwhelming trendy with mirrors all over the walls in the back room and sea decorations up front. All ages fit in and it’s good for any occasion.
***Tip: Don’t miss Lobsterpalooza every Sunday where you’ll chow down on 1/4 pound lobster with grilled corn on the cob and potatoes all for $24. In addition, if you are REALLY into oysters, make sure to download their iPhone app called Oysterpedia.
Other locations include: Upper West Side or Mermaid Oyster Bar in Greenwich Village.
