Fried Chicken and Waffles is not a new thing, but it’s a thing that creates giddiness in all human beings no matter what carb haters say. Sweet, salty, crispy, maple-y, and toasty are all adjectives and feelings that you get from a plate of a big ‘ole bird and sweet dough. The Williamsburg restaurant Sweet Chick swam on over to Manhattan last summer offering it’s same hipster vibes and same menu. Brunch is more fun than dinner as you can attack all the sweet breakfast treats such as a Lemon Poppy Seed bread (insane), Gooey Sticky Buns with Salted Caramel Sauce, Donuts, Blueberry Scones, etc. Let’s face it, you need that sugar pick-me-up on a Saturday or Sunday morning.
For the main event, you can choose from Shrimp & Grits, Smoked Pork Hash, Kale B.L.T. Salad, Black Bean Cake and Scramble, Chicken and Waffles, etc. If you notice a pattern, yes, it is almost impossible to eat healthy here, and you come here for the comfort. On that note, yes, Sweet Chick, is a perfect spot for your first afternoon meal after a night of drinking. The crowd is young, people are guzzling bloody mary’s with bacon, and slouching in their seats.
Daily Pastries
Do not overlook the sides game here. Some highlights include: Biscuit and Ja, Carolina Cheese Grits, Maple Glazed Bacon, Egg and Cheese on a Biscuit. A biscuit egg sandwich is all I want in the morning, and for some reason you don’t see that everywhere. While this is on the sides menu, it’s only $6 and a real winner. The biscuit might look mini when it comes out but the oozy egg and your previous pastry coated stomach won’t need much more. The Eggs Benny on Biscuits with Shredded Smoked Chicken, Smoked Ham, Hollandaise, and Home Fries is also another tasty dish should you not want to go all out for the fried chicken and waffles.
One thing that is also spectacular is that they offer Weekday Brunch. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked for a place for a friend visiting or perhaps you have a random day off. No one does it–thank you Sweet Chick for answering our brunch prayers. Sweet Chick isn’t trying to show off, create the next magical Instagram phenomenon, or rush you along so they can seat the next table. They are here to feed you, keep you full all day, and let you enjoy some R&R with your pals.
