Buttermilk Channel, located in Carroll Gardens, is a quaint little spot that’s killing it in the brunch department. While the consistent hour and a half waits are already in tact at 12:30 p.m. on a Sunday, it’s the homey and rich buttermilk smells wafting through the air directly into your nose that keeps diners adamant about getting their eat on here. The clean and crisp decor creates a casual and easy going atmosphere for all ages and families, and snagging a seat at the bar can be your quick way to dive straight into a Bloody Mary without waiting for a table. The menu overflows with buttermilk baked goods so get ready to carb up. The Banana Walnut Sticky bun may be a tempting starter, but if you’re headed in the sweet direction down the road, save space in your stomach for the fluffy pancakes or decadent Pecan Pie French Toast.
We were a tad modest and only got one pancake as a side to compliment the French Toast for the group. If you really have to pick between the two because you aren’t brunching with people who can commit to going all out (which would just be weird), choose the pancakes. They are Aunt Jemima lovers dream come true. Not too dense, just the right amount of air and fluffiness and not too sweet. Honestly, when you take a bite of this, all feels right in the world and you immediately think, “Yes, this is what a pancake should taste like.” Now the other sweet guy aka Pecan Pie French Toast is two large, dense triangular pieces of challah topped with bourbon, molasses and powdered sugar. It’s soft, doughy, not to mention gorgeous, and actually seems to taste more like a coffee cake than a typical New York style French Toast which is definitely approved.
Lets talk about the scrambles. We’ve got one with House-Cured Lox and Cream Cheese; a Hot Sausage, Peppers and Onions; and a Roasted Mushrooms, Spinach and Goat Cheese. You must order one of these cute little egg mugs. Each egg dish comes in a little white cup paired with greens and hash browns. You can also switch out the toast for a buttermilk biscuit. The answer to ordering at Buttermilk Channel is simply carbs. If it’s a carb get it on your table. Even the little salty fries add in some spark to your brunch game. Go for it.
