It’s no question that Breads Bakery in Union Square has the best chocolate babka. With each flaky layer of dough covered in Nutella and dark chocolate, this is one of the number one desserts in New York. You really can’t have only ONE sliceĀ and walk away. It’s savory, sweet, doughy, chocolatey, crunchy, and basically the most dreamy bread that came over here from Israel’s Uri Scheft. In honor of the upcoming Jewish New Year this Sunday, Oct. 2, Breads Bakery is offering a new menu available for pre-order and also for purchase now if you can’t wait!
The newest item is the Apple Babka which is baked with sliced apples, cinnamon, and raisins. Apples dipped in honey are a tradition for Rosh Hashanah to evoke a sweet upcoming new year. Why not combine it all in a bread and call it a day? It almost tastes like an apple pie but just in bread form. The Safta Cake is a moist cinnamon honey cake with apples that pairs well with cool whip and even strawberries. Yum! Other breads and items available this year include: Raisin Challah, Marzipan Challah, Honey Cake, Apple Galette, and Cinnamon Raisin Babka.

Let me also be clear that you don’t have to officially celebrate the holiday to indulge in the New Years customs! Breads Bakery is for all New Yorkers, and once you take a bite of anything here, you’ll surely understand. You can call the bakery at 212.633.2253 to place an order. The original location is in Union Square, and there is a newer location at Lincoln Center.
