Back Forty is a fantastic brunch spot in Alphabet City that’s just far enough away from the mainstream and overpopulated East Village spots that there isn’t a massive wait. The full length windows create a pleasant and bright atmosphere inside, and there is a bit of a native feel with tools hanging on the walls, an indigenous quilt, small two top tables and a large communal table. The bartenders are friendly and everyone racks up the Bloody Mary’s and the grass fed burgers. I love that you can order a scoop of vanilla ice cream a la mode(y) with your waffle…Little Miss Sunshine anyone? The romesco with the scrambled eggs add a delicious kick, and I like it because it’s not as saucy as the traditional Italian baked egg dish with tomato sauce. The ruggelach special was a bit dry, so maybe stick to the fresh doughnuts or pop into Jane’s Sweet Buns on your way out of the neighborhood. Although Back Forty West just opened in SoHo and is now winning all the hype, I still think Back Forty in the East Village is an off the radar gem just looking to please hungry brunch-goers each weekend. Once you cross off your list of the top brunch options in the city, stroll on into Back Forty for a lovely day.
